Battle of the Books: Fiction or Nonfiction?

The bridge between truth and imagination has always existed in literature but the distinction between the two does not exist in some languages. Fiction and Nonfiction. Real and unreal. For instance, in Swahili, there is no word set aside to differentiate the two.  They are all summed up as stories “hadithi” and even in my mother tongue Kikuyu where they are all referred to as “rῦgano”. These are the words that come closest to fiction. What distinguishes the real from the made up stories are just the words added to them “rũgano rwa gwĩtungĩra” (made-up story). So why is it that the distinction of the two has become something that’s contested over today? Continue reading

“Selflessness. It should be the basis of every relationship. If a person truly cares about you, they’ll get more pleasure from the way they make you feel, rather than the way you make them feel.”

“Naked truths aren’t always pretty.”

Two months. That’s how long it took for me to finally get the courage to read this book. It was my most anticipated book of 2016. I had my kindle copy pre-ordered months before it was released and even sent my boyfriend for the paperback since they don’t sell Colleen Hoover’s books in Kenya. I had both copies with me but I was too chicken to read it. I was not ready to go through any emotional roller-coaster. What pushed me to pick it up this time was my small sister. She wanted to borrow the book and I didn’t want her to read it before me because her reaction to it would ruin it for me. Seeing that I was holding her from reading the book, I decided to dive in. two months was enough to lower my expectations.

Less than 10 hours. That’s how long it took for me to finish the book. Once I opened it, I found it hard to put it down even when it came to going to get some dinner. That’s typical with any Colleen Hoover book I have ever read. She has a way of bringing to life beautiful narrations and this one has to be her best one yet. It definitely is. I had to do stuff in between while I was reading this and I never wanted to stop. I just had to get through it. I was done with the book at around 3AM and it was worth it when I had a hard time getting up this morning. And the result was exactly what I expected, an emotional roller-coaster I am not sure I’ll get over anytime soon. Continue reading

Favorite Books So Far

This is a list of books that I have fallen in love with and raved about. You’ll find that I don’t stick to one particular genre, I read whatever depending on my mood. I couldn’t stick to a particular number and the list will continue to grow as I keep on picking up new books every time.

The books stayed with me for vast reasons, some just made so much sense and others were purely unique in a beautiful or ugly way. Continue reading

“You’ll never be able to find yourself if you’re lost in someone else.”

This is the first review on a book from my favorite author. I love Collen Hoover and her amazing books. This one though gave me a hangover and I couldn’t pick another book for a while after it.

In all honesty, I think every reader should experience the book I their own way. I went in blind and I guess that’s what made me love it even more. I had no expectations of it, I just read it throughout the night unable to put it down. The whole concept of the story made it even more intriguing.

“You left with my soul in your fists and my heart in your teeth, and I don’t want either of them back.”

“You know why it didn’t work out with him?”
“Because God made you for me.”

I loved this book so much. It was a good read that I got to enjoy over a few days. I wish I could have read through it once but life got into the way. The book picks up on Chelsea’s life a year after her break up. She was a character we got to meet in Stepbrother Dearest.

“As long as my heart is beating, it will only beat for you.”

“You were the best thing that ever happened to me. I hope someday I can say you were one of the best, but for now, it’s only you.”

This book. I had my apprehension before picking this one up mainly because of the taboo title. I never bothered to get it until recently. I love Penelope Ward’s books but this was the only book I shied away from. I got Neighbor Dearest last week and as I was reading it, I realized there was a connection to this book. Curiosity got the better of me and I went and got it. I don’t like feeling left out when it comes to books. Was my concern still there? Definitely. But I slowly started reading it. Continue reading
