Happy New Year!

Boy am I glad the holiday season is over. Trying to sneak some reading time with all the festivities was not easy for me so I have not been really reading any books. And I have been on a roll since yesterday.

“I can’t help thinking it’s a shame he’s such a sadistic bastard, because he has wonderful manners.”

If you are looking for a fast read, this is it. It is not Gone Girl or any other book people will equate it to but it was a quick read for me. It was so much about the suspense because from the start you know how it will all play out. I knew what it was all about from the first few pages. I never even read the blurb to be honest, I just picked it randomly from my TBR list and I must admit it was the perfect book to start the year with.

“Do I detect a renewal of your fighting spirit? I’m so glad. To tell the truth, I’ve been getting quite bored. Bring it on, Grace–I’m waiting for you.”

Meet Jack and Grace Angel who display the picture of a perfect marriage. He is a lawyer and she is the stay at home wife who dresses impeccably, makes amazing food, gardens and is an artist. On the outside, they are perfect and everyone adores them but no one knows what happens behind the scenes. They have no children but Grace has a younger sister under their care with Down’s syndrome. This adds on some points to their group of friends. To add onto this, Jack is domestic abuse lawyer who has been admired for sending away the violent men. And of course he has to be really good looking, because who wants to read about a guy who is not? I honestly don’t get why they always have to be good looking, like are they the only people in the world?

“I don’t suppose I could have a whiskey instead of the wine, could I?”
“Whiskey?”
“Yes”
“I didn’t know you drank whiskey.”
“And I didn’t know you were a psychopath. Just bring me a whiskey”

As I said before, this is not a suspense because you know everything from the start. It is all about watching the plot unfold. I don’t think there was a point in the book where I was dying to find out what was happening or who was going to do what. But the plot was fast enough that I didn’t lose interest. But I also had my WTF moments when some things just did not make sense. Like, really? That had to happen? Grace mostly annoyed me, she was quite daft but she redeemed herself in the end.

behind-closed-doors

I would definitely recommend this book for those who love psychological thrillers. It is such a short read I could have read it in one sitting had I started it at the right time.
